The Doors Open concept is a simple one: buildings of architectural and historical significance, many of which are not normally open to the public, open their doors to visitors for a day or a weekend.

Communities of artists everywhere are getting in on the studio tour trend. Whether it’s a walking tour around a city neighborhood or a driving tour in a rural area, it’s a very pleasant way to spend a day.

Check out the community bulletin boards at your library or laundromat, and choose an upcoming event by a local group (such as amateur theater companies, choirs or high schools) to attend. Along with enjoying an evening’s entertainment, you will be supporting the arts in your community. Have a post-performance debrief over cocktails or espresso.

Buying tickets to multiple performances at the beginning of the season is a great way to set aside “Date Nights.”

If you’re in the market for a fun night out, check out Art Battle, a friendly competition where artists get 20 minutes to complete a painting that you then get to judge. It’s actually pretty fun to watch the blank canvases turn into legitimate works of art in those 20 minutes.
