Laura & JP: Edinburgh Elopement
After meeting via an online dating site, travelling extensively together, and having a son, Laura and JP decided it was time to (literally) tie the knot. “I feel like I have everything I ever wanted,” says Laura. “A kind, funny, patient man who is my best friend, a beautiful boy who links us forever and has been a wonderful source of joy, and the best family and friends.”
JP proposed to Laura by dressing their son, Rhys, in a vest that said “mummy, will you marry my daddy?”. How could she refuse? They decided to elope and get married on a hill called Arthur’s Seat outside of Edinburgh, Scotland, wearing their hiking boots. The proceedings included a hand-binding ceremony, a Celtic tradition from which the phrase “tying the knot” originates. “The ribbons were our ‘something borrowed’ from my mum, so that made it even more special,” says Laura. The humanist vows reflected their values and beliefs about marriage and life perfectly. Rhys was their wedding guest, best man, ring bearer and something blue!
